The first man in space
April 12, 1961, was a day that changed history. The first human flew into space and returned safely, becoming the number one celebrity in the world.
GREETING
yuri gagarin
Gagarin was enormously popular everywhere. Eyewitnesses recall that everyone, young and old, literally lived and breathed space, and dreamed of meeting the world’s first cosmonaut.
The first man in space was the world’s heritage. He became the Hero of Labor in Czechoslovakia, Vietnam, Bulgaria, and also became an honorary citizen of cities in different countries: France, Greece, Cyprus. Yuri was even awarded gold keys from two Egyptian cities: Cairo and Alexandria.
Yuri gagarin in london
Yuri Gagarin visited the United Kingdom on July 11, 1961. His visit to Great Britain was a real triumph. Although London’s doubtful weather shut the spaceman up in a closed black car, London’s roaring, waving welcome everywhere he went was warm and spontaneous beyond comparison.
ОPEN-ROOF ROLLS ROYCE "YG 1"
Yuri travelled in an open-roof Rolls Royce Silver Cloud-II with the number plate "YG 1", which meant Yuri Gagarin First.
The Manchester-based Union of Foundry Workers invited Mr Gagarin
The Manchester-based Union of Foundry Workers invited Mr Gagarin over, and, he accepted the invite. On 12 July 1961, Gagarin flew up to Manchester as a guest of the Amalgamated Union of Foundry Workers, who invited him to the Metropolitan-Vickers (also known as AEI) engineering plant in Trafford Park, the city’s industrial hub at that time.
YURI GAGARIN’S TRIP TO MANCHESTER
"What's interesting about the trip to Manchester is that it was the only one from the whole world tour that wasn't arranged by an official state body," says Richard Evans, a writer and an expert on Mr Gagarin's life, standing beside an old brick building that used to be the headquarters of the Union.
"He came up here to see the workers - and that's one of the great things about him, because it connects with his past."
Yuri Gagarin was met by the Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan
The British government realised how wildly popular Gagarin was, and his privite visit very soon became a state visit, it quickly became very formal. The cosmonaut was met by the Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan. Major Gagarin spent about a quarter of an hour with the Prime Minister at Admiralty House.
The Queen Elisabeth II was amazed by yuri gagarin
Yuri Gagarin also met Elizabeth II, who shared her impressions of their meeting, saying that he was very charming although he couldn’t speak English at all.
Yuri Gagarin had no idea how to use all the devices that were in front of him. But he found the way out of a difficult situation: "Let's eat in Russian way," he said taking the first spoon he could find and pouring it into his plate of salad. Elizabeth, taking a spoon, said: "Gentlemen, let's eat in Gagarin way," and began to eat lunch. And a few minutes later, in a joking way, she admitted that she didn't know what devices were needed to eat correctly. The footmen served her.
There is another anecdote, popular in Russia, about Yuri Gagarin, when he was served tea with lemon when dining with the English Queen. After he had had the tea, he reached into the cup with a spoon (or, in some sources, even with his bare fingers) and ate the lemon, which apparently was a blatant violation of the protocol. The Queen smiled, followed suit and ate hers too with the words "Let's drink tea in Gagarin way". As a result, the royal dining protocol has been since amended to allow this.
The first curious incident with court etiquette occurred during the photography. At the end of the meeting, when Yuri Gagarin was about to leave, Elizabeth broke the law (the monarch is forbidden to take pictures with ordinary people), asking to take pictures of them together. And when the picture was ready, she said: "I took a picture with a heavenly, that is, unearthly, person and therefore did not violate anything." By the way, Yuri Gagarin is the only human who Elizabeth II asked for a photo.
