the former gymnasium where I. Bunin studied.
The gymnasium that I. A. Bunin entered and later studied at is now preserved in the city. This building is now occupied by School No. 1, in memory of the fact that the famous writer studied here from 1881 to 1885, is reflected on a commemorative plaque attached to the facade of the school. I. A. Bunin's favorite city Yelets
Bunin loved Yelets very much and admired its history and military exploits. It is about this city that amazing lines are written in the novel " The Life of Arsenyev" : " ...The city itself was also proud of its antiquity and had every right to do so: it was indeed one of the most ancient Russian cities, lying among the great black earth fields of the Undergrowth on that fatal line beyond which the "wild, unknown lands" once stretched, belonged to those most important strongholds of Russia that, according to the chroniclers, for the first time they inhaled the storm, dust and cold from under the menacing Asian clouds that now and then set over her, the first to let Moscow know about the impending trouble and the first to lay down their bones for her. " Here it is, Bunin's favorite city.
. A. Bunin House Museum
While studying at the gymnasium, I. Bunin lived in the house of a philistine Rostovtsev. This building in Yelets has been preserved, has been restored and at this time it is in this house that the I. A. Bunin Museum is located. The writer perfectly expressed his memories of the time of study and life in the city in the work "The Life of Arsenyev": "I stayed at the gymnasium for four years, living as a freeloader with a philistine Rostovtsev, in a small and poor environment: I could not get into another one, rich citizens did not need freeloaders." The writer's childhood and youth memories are very closely connected with this city. Bunin loved to walk along its ancient streets and the impressions that he received while in Yelets, the writer carried through his whole life.

And the Shopping Street itself, along which Bunin loved to walk, has retained its charm. The same old buildings in which shops and shops were located at the end of the XIX century can still be seen today. So colorfully Bunin describes this place in his story "The Village":" ... The smell of bakeries and iron roofs, the pavement on the Shopping Street, tea, rolls and a Persian march in the Kars tavern... The floors in the shops watered from teapots, the battle of the famous quail at Rudakov's door, the smell of fish row, dill, Romanov's shag."The memories of the great writer about the ancient city are amazing and piercing.
