The history of Lensk is typical of Siberian river towns. In the old days the peoples were engaged in mining and shipping furs, arranged Amici pits. There were many exiles living in the vicinity of the settlement. Vitus Bering had made his way through these lands, and Russia was gradually gaining and establishing its rights to the harsh, remote land. The city was founded on the site of the village of Mukhtuya, which appeared in the middle of the XVIII century with the opening of the Irkutsk-Yakut post road. The Muhtuya was formed by drivers who were engaged in transporting mail and maintaining the road. In memory of this, the city has a monument «Troika»
In 2001, Lensk experienced a devastating flood, the water in the Lena rose by 20 meters and covered the town, the damage exceeded six billion rubles. About ten thousand people came here to participate in the repair and restoration work. During the three summer months, more than 400 thousand square meters of housing were built. This is the annual program of the millionth city. A huge role was played by the support of the President of the Russian Federation. Vladimir Putin, who visited our town twice that year.
